Virginia CLE Requirements

Virginia requires attorneys to complete 12 Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) credit hours each year. The 12 VA CLE hours must include at least 2 hours of Ethics / Professionalism, and at least 4 credit hours of Live/Interactive programing.

Virginia attorneys must complete their CLE requirement by October 31st each year.

Virginia attorneys may carry over up to 12 excess Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) credit hours, including up to 2 ethics or professionalism hours, into the next reporting period.
Carryover credits are valid for one year. A maximum of 8 of these carryover hours can be from pre-recorded/distance learning courses.

Virginia attorneys self-report Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) credits annually by December 15 (4:45 p.m. EST) through the Virginia State Bar (VSB) online member portal.
Attorneys enter the course ID numbers found on their certificates of attendance, provided by sponsors for approved courses, to verify their compliance.
