According to birth dates, the New Jersey State Bar groups attorneys into one of two compliance groups:

   Group 1 (Birthday Jan. - June)
   Compliance Deadline: December 31st, every odd year

   Group 2 (Birthday July - Dec.)
   Compliance Deadline: December 31st, every even year

The State Bar of New Jersey requires attorneys to complete 24 CLE credit hours every 2 years, including:

• 5 credits of ethics and/or professionalism. At least 2 of these 5 credit hours must be in diversity, inclusion, and elimination of bias

• At least 12 credits through live programs

• Up to 12 credits of alternate verifiable learning formats per reporting period

New Jersey attorneys may carry over up to 12 regular CLE credits into the next compliance period, including specific amounts for ethics, professionalism, and trial skills (e.g., 2 ethics, 2 professionalism, 3 trial skills); however, these carried-over credits must be used in the next compliance cycle, or they are forfeited. 

During the assigned annual attorney registration period, attorneys certify their CLE compliance on the official NJ courts portal.

Attorneys should keep certificates of attendance for three years.
