New York CLE Requirements

  • 30 days after your birthday; every 2 years

    As a New York attorney, your CLE deadline falls 30 days after your birthday, every two years, based on your admission year:

    • If you were admitted in an even-numbered year, your deadline falls in even-numbered years.

    • If you were admitted in an odd-numbered year, your deadline falls in odd-numbered years.

    Note: Attorneys admitted before January 1, 1982, must comply in even-numbered years, regardless of their admission year.

  • Experienced Attorney Requirements: 24 hours every 2 years, including:

    • 4 hours of Ethics & Professionalism

    • 1 hour of Diversity, Inclusion & Elimination of Bias

    • 1 hour of Cybersecurity, Privacy, and Data Protection

    Newly Admitted Attorney Requirements: 16 transitional CLE hours each year for the first 2 years, including:

    • 3 hours of Ethics & Professionalism

    • 6 hours of Skills

    • 7 hours of Law Practice Management and/or areas of Professional Practice

    • 1 hour of Cyber Security, Privacy, and Data Protection during the first or second year as one of the total 32 credit hours

  • Attorneys can carry over 6 credits into the next reporting period.

  • New York attorneys certify their compliance on their attorney registration here.

    Certificates of completion must be kept for four years, but do not have to be recorded with the CLE board.
